Da Nang overwhelmed by trash as manpower shortage leaves 1,700 tons of waste daily
Da Nang is grappling with a difficult waste problem as the city receives approximately 1,700 tons of domestic solid waste each day, while facing a severe shortage of sanitation workers.
According to authorities, the manpower shortage is causing major difficulties in waste collection and treatment. Many residential areas and streets are piled up with trash, marring the urban landscape and affecting public health. Particularly, as Da Nang is an attractive tourist destination, environmental sanitation has become even more urgent to preserve the city's image as a livable place.
The main reason cited is that compensation is not commensurate with the work pressure, driving many workers to leave the industry. To address the waste problem, the city is exploring solutions to increase mechanization and improve working conditions for workers, while calling on residents to join in sorting waste at the source.
